Microsofts latest Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system aims to create extra competition for multimedia and business consumer markets.

The strength of the Apple iPhone and Google Android operating systems in the mobile phone market gives Microsoft a significant challenge to force their way back into the reckoning. Its latest Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system is set for release, with mobile consumers looking on intriguingly with interest as Microsoft seeks to find its place in the market.

As a multimedia mobile device, the iPhone and the latest Google Android handsets such as the HTC Magic and HTC Hero are very highly rated and enjoy a stronghold with users that wish to enjoy compatibility and flexibility both in the home and at work. Yet Microsoft is keen to target this same crowd by offering Exchange email software and database access at work as well as connectivity to social networking and music applications at the touch of a button at home.

Mobile phone usage has evolved over the last couple of years in a considerable fashion. No longer are users happy to own a device for calls and a device for multimedia the expectation is to be able to purchase and enjoy using a single device that is fused to meet both consumer and business needs.

HTC has added its weight behind the latest Windows Mobile 6.5 software by including the operating system in its latest handsets, the Touch2 and the Touch HD2 due for release next week. A revamped version of the Internet Explorer mobile interface is set to impress consumers as well as businessmen that will largely seek the OS for its synergy with Microsoft Exchange servers.

It was revealed that only ten percent of the mobile consumer market realised that there is a Windows Mobile service available, however this is largely due to Microsofts previous primary targeting towards business users. The extra competition in the multimedia and business mobile market can only be good for the consumer.

Giacomo Marchesi

Live images of the Samsung SCH-i220 Code have just leaked out, and there it is, emblazoned across the top of the device: the MetroPCS logo. Running WinMo 6.1 on a QVGA display with EVDO, a 2.0 megapixel camera, and a QWERTY keyboard, it’s not exactly mind-blowing on the hardware specs front - but a smartphone is a smartphone.

Current rumors pin this launching sometime next month, though there’s no word yet on pricing.

Microsoft has apparently come up with a strategy for righting the ship in its struggling Windows Mobile business, although that ship won’t be ready to sail anytime soon.

In a Wednesday report, the Taiwan-based tech journal DigiTimes said Microsoft plans to use both Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Mobile 7 to compete with Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhone.

Quoting unnamed sources with knowledge of Microsoft’s road map, DigiTimes said Microsoft plans to launch Windows Mobile 6.5 on Oct. 1 and then follow that with an upgrade next February that adds a touch-screen interface.

Windows Mobile 7, which Microsoft has said will offer a user experience commensurate with that of the highest-end smartphones, won’t launch until the fourth quarter of 2010, according to DigiTimes. Microsoft hasn’t offered a timetable for Windows Mobile 7, but its industry partners expect it to arrive early next year. The oft-delayed Windows Mobile 7 has been linked to the reported struggles of Microsoft’s top-secret ‘Pink’ smartphone project.

When Windows Mobile 7 is completed, Microsoft will cut the price of Windows Mobile 6.5 and go to market with both versions, using the former to compete with the iPhone and the latter to compete with Android devices, DigiTimes reported.

Given Microsoft’s Windows Mobile struggles and the software giant’s borderline clinical obsession with both Apple and Google, all of this sounds extremely plausible. However, Microsoft declined to comment on the DigiTimes report.

“We have said we will deliver new Windows phones this fall and we remain on track to do that,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in an e-mail. “We have nothing new to say about future versions.”

Microsoft in February introduced the term “Windows phone” to describe devices running Windows Mobile and services. While this was interpreted as an effort to rebrand Windows Mobile, it’s actually part of Microsoft’s strategy of portraying Windows as a hub for the “three screens” of PCs, mobile devices and televisions.

At Microsoft’s financial analyst meeting last month, Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division, said Microsoft will continue to invest in and build on the brand of Windows phones, and also will strive for “dramatic improvement” in integrating Windows Mobile with devices built by hardware partners.

“To date, we haven’t done as good a job as I would like in building the relationships and getting the right level of integration with our hardware OEMs,” Bach said at the event.

But even if Microsoft were to launch Windows Mobile 7 today, the iPhone’s momentum would likely continue to cause insomnia within Microsoft’s executive ranks. Apple sold 5.2 million iPhones in its most recent quarter, and RBC Capital Markets recently predicted that Apple will sell 31.4 million iPhones in its 2010 fiscal year and 82 million iPhones in fiscal 2012.

Meanwhile, Microsoft officials continue to put on a brave face with respect to the iPhone. Last month, Bach said the Windows Mobile 6.5 Web browsing experience will be better than that of the iPhone, and Steven Hegenderfer, group product manager of Windows Mobile, said it’s too early to assume that Apple will be the dominant player in mobile applications. Microsoft has also begun luring iPhone developers over to Windows Mobile.

While it’s still early days in the mobile industry, Microsoft will have to start figuring out how to deliver more quickly on its Windows phone vision or Apple and other industry foes are just going to continue padding their already sizable lead in the space. <!--

When a person says they like something, they might also add: “What’s not to like?”

When Steve Ballmer said he liked Microsoft’s Windows Mobile strategy a few years back, you had to ask “what strategy”?

Microsoft’s chief executive told CNBC-TV “I like our strategy, I like it a lot” while laughing off Apple’s iPhone.

Ballmer was speaking when the iPhone was announced and not yet released, Microsoft’s primary market in mobile was business users, and the competition was RIM and the sickly Palm.

It was a stable and predictable world, like the world of super-power politics before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Now, with the company losing market share to Apple along with RIM and Palm, and Google moving into the handset space with Android, old certainties are off and Microsoft is scrambling to find its place in the new world order.

Six months ago it unveiled Windows Mobile 6.5, which will add some finger-based input capabilities to Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile 6.5 wasn’t even talked about when Ballmer went on TV in 2007, and when it launches in October this year it’ll be almost two and a half years behind the iPhone and four months after Palm’s webOS was released with the Pre.

We were told Windows Mobile 7.0 would follow in 2010, and would add more touch capabilities. Details are sketchy and Microsoft has not talked about Windows Mobile 7.0, but we had something to aim at. Call it “a strategy.”

Now, it seems that Microsoft plans an interim Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade in February 2010 “with a touch interface”, DigiTimes has reported. The report cites sources inside handset makers.

And, once Windows Mobile 7.0 is released in the fourth-quarter of 2010 Microsoft will cut the price of Windows Mobile 6.5. The idea is to compete against Android using Windows Mobile 6.5 and the iPhone with Windows Mobile 7.0, DigiTimes said.

Microsoft refused to comment on the report, but a spokesperson told The Reg that Microsoft is excited about the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5. “This is our focus right now,” he said.

The dictionary defines strategy as “a plan, method, or series of maneuvers or stratagems for obtaining a specific goal or result.” Based on what we’ve seen, on what Microsoft has said about needing to do better, and on the company’s recent loss of market share, it would be generous to call what’s going on in Windows Mobile a strategy - now, in 2007, or going further back.

If DigiTimes is correct, the new so-called dual-approach strategy backs what The Reg believes is Microsoft’s real goal: use Windows Mobile 6.5 to onramp iPhone converts to Windows Mobile 7.0.

It’s hard to see, though, whether Microsoft can sway iPhone developers with the offer of either of these operating systems, or if they’ll respond to being gently moved down an unclear roadmap that’ll simply bring Microsoft to some kind of parity with Apple, Google, and Palm once it’s completed.

Meanwhile, we have the added complication of Windows 7. This will add finger-licking touch and raise further questions of why didn’t Microsoft simply cut its losses and cut down the PC version of Windows for mobile devices.

Keeping up with the Joneses

This would have made sense for the roadmap of Windows and provided a practical answer to getting developers. Microsoft could appeal to the existing base of Windows programmers, rather than try to poach smartphone developers from Apple, Google, Palm, or RIM.

At a high level, Microsoft’s approach to mobile has been sound: build market share for Windows using devices, with Microsoft as a software-only player. It’s what Microsoft did in the PC and server world - build software and outsource hardware engineering and delivery to partners.

Ballmer had every reason to like Microsoft’s strategy because it worked. Microsoft has provided email, web browsing, and music in Windows on handsets right up there with everyone else and it has built market share. Windows Mobile worked for business users, and Microsoft kept up with the competition.

However, Microsoft did not excite developers or consumers, the leading adopters of new technologies past whose embrace of touch on smart phones is driving uptake of the iPhone among business users.

In the partner model Microsoft has followed, excitement and innovation must come from the top - from the software provider. And in this regard, Microsoft has failed to read the future and create a strategy for it in the way that Apple did, and in the way Google and Palm have now caught on to.

Microsoft needs a strategy reset to regain a vision that will capture developers and consumers, not updates to Windows 6.5. ®

I’ve spent a good amount of time with HTC’s Touch Pro 2 for T-Mobile, and this beast has a long feature set that will make smartphone fans drool. But is the Windows Mobile-powered gadget just a good device on paper?

Hardware

There’s no way around it: the HTC Touch Pro 2 is a brick. It’s a hefty device that just feels bigger than it really is (full specs here). With that said, it’s not entirely unwieldy, and it still easily fits in a pocket.

The size of the device means it has more room for a big screen, and the 3.6-inch display is gorgeous. Whether you’re shooting off an e-mail, surfing the Web, or watching a video, the 800 by 480 screen is crisp and sharp, and colors are vibrant. It is a resistive screen though, and it’s not as responsive as the capacitive screen found on the iPhone or the Pre. Still, it’s pretty responsive with or without the stylus, and the accelerometer adjusts the orientation quickly.

The bulk of the device also gives ample room for a large, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. You can slide it out horizontally and then flip up the screen about 45 degrees for a real mobile computing experience. The keys are big, have plenty of room between them, and are the right mix of “clicky” and responsive. There’s a full row for numbers too, so you won’t have to mess around with the alternative button to include a phone number in messages. There’s also auto-correction software in there, but it’s so easy to quickly type messages that this hardly comes into play.

T-Mobile is offering it in a mocha color, and it’s stylish and snazzy. I know the Zune got a lot of grief for its brown color, but I’ve had enough of silver and black products - bring on more brown gadgets. I also like how this version has the microSD slot accessible from the side of the device instead of behind the back cover. This isn’t a major deal, but it’s nice to hot swap memory cards if needed.

Software

The software is both frustrating and easy to use. First of all, it’s been a while since I’ve used a Windows Mobile device as my primary phone, so it took me a while to get into Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s lame user paradigm (downloading apps from the browser, finding them, and installing them is a chore). I got really frustrated the first 10 minutes while trying to set up my usual things - Facebook app, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Sync, etc. - because things like the iPhone, Android, webOS, and even BlackBerry have conditioned me to expect more intuitive interfaces.

But once you start getting into the groove, this is a nice phone to get things done with. Like most of its modern devices, HTC layered on their own user interface on top of the OS. TouchFLO 3D isn’t changed that much from previous versions, and it’s still finger-friendly, generally very aesthetically pleasing, and offers a good amount of customization. Like other versions though, the jump from the TouchFLO UI to the underlying one can be somewhat jarring, especially in the mail clients.

Messaging and e-mail are top notch too, as it has Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology for real-time syncing with Outlook e-mails, contacts, and calendaring. Web-based providers like Yahoo Mail and Gmail can also be brought to the device relatively easily, and the large keyboard makes shooting off e-mails a breeze. The texting client’s rock solid but nothing to write home about, and it’s capable of supporting a smorgasbord of instant messaging programs.

The Touch Pro 2 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, but it should be upgradable to the 6.5 version that’s expected to be released in the fourth quarter. I think that decision will ultimately be up to T-Mobile, but there are other places to go to get it.

Call Quality, Data, Multimedia

Call quality was really strong, whether I was on the move or stationary. HTC’s making a big hubbub about the handset’s speakerphone, and it is actually really good. You can activate the speakerphone by laying the phone face down on a surface, and there’s also a mute button. I tried this mode with multiple people, and they knew I was on speakerphone but said the call quality was very clear. The Straight Talk feature combines a lot of voice, messaging, and e-mail features, and it makes it really simple to create a conference call by selecting names from your inbox. Overall, the call management software is excellent, and will be appreciated by any mobile worker.

The handset can take advantage of T-Mobile’s growing 3G network, and I found speedy data reception throughout most of San Francisco. Speeds are pretty consistent with what you’d get from Verizon (NYSE: VZ) or Sprint (NYSE: S), but I did not run official speed tests. One little quirk I don’t like in the software is that the big browser icon launches you into mobile Internet Explorer instead of the superior Opera Mobile that’s also on deck.

I gave up my car earlier this year, as living in San Francisco just made it a ticket magnet. As such, my commutes consist of walking or public transportation, and I’ve long since ditched an iPod in favor of a music-capable phone. Because of this, I absolutely loathe multimedia-capable handsets that don’t have a standard headphone jack, and, unfortunately, the Touch Pro 2 falls into this category. You have to use a stupid USB dongle converter for regular headphones, and it looks like that won’t be the case for the Sprint version. I know this is a minor issue for many of you, but this does hurt this handset’s ability to be a true convergence device. It’s a shame too because this thing could be a multimedia beast: it can play pretty much any normal video or audio standard, download podcasts on the go, and the screen’s gorgeous.

The Final Take

It’s a bulky handset packed to the gills with features, and the large keyboard and best-in-class speakerphone make the Touch Pro 2 a good choice for mobile professionals. There are still some hiccups with Windows Mobile, and the lack of a standard headphone jack angers me to no end, but neither is enough for me to disparage this handset. This should be winding up on pretty much every major carrier, so you might want to wait for your carrier to nab it because T-Mobile’s $349.99 price with a new contract is a little too high for my taste.

NEWS ANALYSIS: Google is set to announce another Android-based smartphone, so it’s time to consider Android’s standing in the enterprise. Does Android have what it takes to beat out the competition from the likes of RIM’s BlackBerry, the Palm Pre Web OS and Microsoft Windows Mobile?

In an announcement that has put Microsoft, Research In Motion, Apple and the many other smartphone makers on notice, the follow-up to the T-Mobile G1, the first Android-based device, is coming to store shelves this summer.

Dubbed the myTouch 3G, the device will feature an improved Android operating system, an affordable $199 price tag, and most importantly, it won’t have the slide-out keyboard found in the T-Mobile G1. That should help the device fit more easily into pockets and compete on the same level as major players in the market.

Although the T-Mobile G1 is one of the forgotten competitors in the touch-screen smartphone space, it sold well. As of this writing, T-Mobile has sold 1.5 million G1 units. It’s not a stellar number that would make Apple worry, but it’s a fine showing from a device that’s on one of the least-popular carriers’ networks. Given the success of the G1, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility to expect the myTouch 3G to beat out its predecessor both on features and sales.

If that happens, should RIM and Microsoft be worried? Unlike Palm and Apple, which only sell one smartphone to customers, RIM and Microsoft use their software to sell multiple devices on multiple carriers. It’s a strategy that has helped the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile attract a respectable following in the enterprise. Google, through the Open Handset Alliance and its open-source Android platform, is taking aim at both RIM and Microsoft. It doesn’t expect Android-based phones to sell as well as the iPhone and it doesn’t really care if they don’t. Instead, Google is trying to create an operating system that can be on multiple devices from multiple carriers to help solidify itself as the “go-to” platform in the smartphone market.

It could happen. Recent reports have suggested Dell, Nokia, Motorola, Acer, and a slew of other vendors are seriously considering releasing an Android-based phone. Those companies see Android as an appealing alternative to Windows Mobile devices that simply can’t compete on any level with highly coveted products in the space. For its part, Google contends that more than 20 Android-based smartphones will be offered to customers by the end of 2009. It’s a lofty claim, given it only has one smartphone on store shelves now. But if we consider its software, it’s not such an outlandish hope. If companies are trying to get into the smartphone market to compete with Apple in the consumer side or RIM on the enterprise side, Android is simply the best platform to go with.

It is no secret that Sony Ericsson is working on at least one Android phone to be released later this year.

They told us about it themselves. And now the details start trickling out.

The first Sony Ericsson Android smartphone is codenamed “Rachael“, has got a big touchscreen display, and is built on Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon platform.

Snapdragon has some pretty amazing amazing specs – up to 1 GHz CPU, HD video decoding ,12mpx camera, GPS, broadcast TV and Wi-Fi support. Though it remains to be seen which of them make it into a new SE Android handset. Probably not all of them, since we already know that SE opted for a lower resolution – 8.1 megapixel camera on this phone.

They have decided to market their new smartphone under the Xperia brand. And since Xperia X2 is already reserved for their next WinMo smartphone, could this be Sony Ericsson Xperia X5 we’ve been hearing about?

And we’ve also got some info on another Sony Ericsson phone codenamed “Kiki”, which I’ll put into an “interesting/strange” category.

Sony Ericsson “Kiki” comes with a transparent glasslike display. The images are projected on this display and, it seems, can be viewed from both sides of the handset. It also has a smooth surface keypad on the front, where the numbers should appear when the phone is on. Though I have no idea how tactile it would be and whether the symbols on it are fixed or adaptable. Could go both ways.

Anyway, we’ll be watching developments on both of these handsets and will bring you the news as they come along. Stay tuned.
