Is Sony finally taking aim at Apple’s iPhone? Over the weekend the Japanese business daily Nikkei reported that Sony plans to form a skunkworks team whose job it will be to design a hybrid video game-cell phone gizmo—one that taps the company’s years of producing PlayStation Portable gaming consoles and Sony-Ericsson handsets. A spokeswoman at Sony wouldn’t confirm whether the report was true, and would only say that executives were considering “various possibilities.” Combining elements of a PSP and handset would seem a “natural process of thinking,” the spokeswoman said, without elaborating. Does the world need another smartphone operating system? Apple’s iPhone OS is still booming; Google’s Android is increasingly promising; and three longtime contenders–Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, RIM’s BlackBerry OS, and Symbian’s S60–are undergoing serious renovation to keep up with the times.

All of which presents a major challenge for WebOS, the much-anticipated, much-delayed phone OS that debuts on the Palm Pre. For WebOS to have a future, it must do more than catch up with its competitors. In one or more major respects, it must be better than existing alternatives. Otherwise, Palm–the beleaguered company whose PalmPilot and Treo were handheld-computing landmarks–might just as well have built a Pre that used Android or some other already-here OS. Taiwan-based PDA, smartphone and navigation device maker Mio Technology is due to soon release a Windows Mobile 6.5-powered handset, the Mio Amber, according to some leaked specs and images. The device, codenamed Mio Amber, will reportedly sport a 3.6-inch, 800×480-pixel touchscreen display and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus. Huawei Technologies yesterday showcased two new smartphones at CommunicAsia—the Android-powered U8230 and the C8000 supporting Windows Mobile.

The U8230 allows users to switch between full and half QWERTY keyboards and to navigate programs via a 3.5-inch LCD touch screen. Iris Browser是由Torch Mobile推出的一款能与Opera Mobile竞争的手机浏览器产品，网页也是通过安装在手机上的客户端直接解析的，基于Webkit的解析引擎，支持网页缩放、多种字符集的网页、内置鼠标指针、Touch操作等功能，整体和Opera Mobile有得一拼。作为手机浏览器中的后起之秀，从客户端的功能和效果上看，还是非常值得期待的一个浏览器，试用过程中，感觉页面的解析非常到位（特别是CSS部分），不过解析的速度没有Opera Mobile快，另外Opera Mobile没有解决的内存占用较大的老大难问题，同样存在于Iris Browser上。值得一提的是，内置的鼠标指针，对CSS制作的层叠菜单都能很好的显示，这点比Opera Mobile做的更好。网络链接的方式，如果没有特殊需求，建议设置Not Specified，这样会根据目前连接上的情况自动选择。
